After spending much time bringing Alpha Wave to as many mobile platforms as we could along with all the many tweaks and updates, the time had come to start our next game which we did quite a few months ago. We wanted to wait until we really solidified just what this game was and what it would look like before we revealed it to you all.
The wait is over. Today we are pleased to finally give you all the first peak at our next game – metaBall! This is a new twist on the ball rolling genre that is best described as “Marble Madness meets Q*Bert in a Tron universe!”.
You must navigate your ball from the start point to the end point all the while flipping as many tiles as you can from one state to another and doing so in a certain amount of time. There will be things to collect, obstacles to avoid and tricky areas to maneuver through. Perhaps even some enemies or turrets thrown in for good measure. We aren’t sure yet. We want to produce a nice collection of levels each of which are playable in 60 seconds or less so that you can literally pick up your device and have “a quick game”!
metaBall is still in the pre-alpha stage but progress is moving quite nicely and we are aiming for a “sometime around spring” as a release date. We’ll firm this up as time goes on. We are also exploring various ways to fund the rest of production which may include corporate funding or a kickstarter campaign. More on that in due time.
In the mean time…. screen caps to massage your senses!
We just pushed an update for Alpha Wave to the Amazon App Store that includes support for playing Alpha Wave with the Fire TV’s remote as well as support for the Fire TV Stick. One handed gaming FTW! Enjoy!
We are delighted to announce that you can now wave up on your big screen TV with the arrival of Alpha Wave on Android TV. If you own an Nexus Player, you can even use the remote to play with one hand! This update also ushers in an x86 Android version of the game which yields an even better gaming experience on systems that use Intel CPU’s like the Nexus Player.
Just in time for the start of the holidays, we are happy to announce that Alpha Wave has finally made it onto the little console that could! Ouya is the perfect little platform for our humble little shooter! Enjoy!
Find it via the Ouya launcher or queue it for download now!
Yes… we did. Just now. See look up there at the title!
I guess what we are trying to say is that Amazon gamers can now start seeing just who the king or queen of Alpha Wave will be with full global leader board support powered by Amazon’s Game Circle service. You will also have 24 achievements to unlock as well. This update to Alpha Wave on Amazon App Store will also include the latest update features mentioned earlier, so there is that too! Win win!
We hope to see some ridiculously high scores up there in the near future!! WAVE UP!!
We don’t stop with the updates to keep our game fresh! First off, we noticed that a lot of people are loving the game BUT not many are actually able to finish any of the levels, even on easy difficulty, so we went back and tweaked the weapons to make them more powerful and we also smoothed out gameplay in various parts of the levels to even things up.
Along with those important gameplay tweaks, we’ve also noticeably improved rendering performance which is never a bad thing and updated some special effects to be more… special!
Also included in this update is restart button in the in-game pause menu so you don’t have to cycle all the way back to the main menu just to restart a level which a lot of people asked for and finally, when you enter in your name for the high score, the game remembers this name so you don’t have to enter it again which is another feature that was asked for numerous times!
Roll out is complete to the Google Play App store and will be showing up on the Nook and Amazon app stores soon. Apple and Windows Phone 8 will be updated in the coming week!
We are happy to report that we were finally able figure out why Alpha Wave was crashing on various Windows Phone 8 handsets and we’ve patched it all up. Our testers report that it now works on the Lumia 920, 930 and 1520!
Windows Phone Central posted a very nice review of Alpha Wave:
It was a fair and well written review but they did bring up a few concerns as have others about Alpha Wave on WP8 and so to address these concerns (and complaints) we’ve updated Alpha Wave across all WP8 devices. The following fixes were made:
* Sped up load times
* Removed unneeded permissions
* Added free trial
* Fixed a potential crash bug that has been causing the game to crash on some phones
Please do let us know if there are any more concerns, otherwise…. WAVE UP!!! 🙂
Alpha Wave is officially done and while we spent a lot more time on it than we had originally planned to, we wanted to ensure that our first game really reflected the type of quality we want to project in our games and it has paid off. The bigger doors are starting to open now and there will be some exciting partnerships to tell you about in the near future! We will however still keep updating Alpha Wave to fix any bugs that may arise.
So what’s next then?
We have started looking into using the open source GamePlay3D engine (www.gameplay3d.org) which will allow us to expand the quality of our games to include better physics, eye bleeding special effects, character animation and far quicker development cycles. Once we integrate our Halogen game engine with GamePlay’s render engine and implement a few other tweaks to get it to our liking, we are going to start prototyping the next TWO games.
That’s right. TWO!
One will be an evolution to Alpha Wave (as opposed to a sequel) and the other will be a cool arcade/puzzle game that is unlike anything out there right now. Once we prototype and play test a little, we’ll have a better idea as to whether or not these games will be worthwhile for us to make and for you to play. We will then start pushing out some screen shots! 🙂
